Organization to provide dental care to thousands

What’s being called “the largest temporary dental office ever created in Georgia,” and is expected to serve 2,000 people in need, will set up operations inside First Baptist Woodstock next month. The goal is to assist adults, who can’t afford dental care,

with fillings, extractions and cleanings, as well as educate them about the importance of oral hygiene and raise awareness of people who have trouble affording treatment.

“We expect to be doing $1 million of dental work,” said Karyn Stockwell, chair of the Georgia Mission of Mercy (GMOM), which is putting on the event. “We want to raise the awareness of people with limited resources, provide them with education, too. (Many) of the problems are preventable.” The effort is anticipated to relieve dental pain, restore smiles, self-esteem and employability. Calling the economy “dicey,” Stockwell said she hopes to serve more than 2,000 low- and no-income adults, placing priority on patients who are suffering from dental infections or pain. The event also aims to educate patients and family members who attend the importance of obtaining and maintaining oral health, raise awareness about the difficulty low-income adults face in accessing dental care and challenge patients, policymakers and dental professionals to “work together to improve the oral health of those who have been promised care by the state.”
